The Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, enlisted Slade Architecture to expand their programming space with a wellness center set within the forest and a 6,000-square-foot addition to the existing museum. At the heart of this expansion is a commitment to sustainability, seamlessly integrating the design with the natural environment to create a space that promotes well-being, education, and environmental stewardship.
The wellness center is thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its surroundings, offering a tranquil retreat that emphasizes the deep connection between nature and health. With flexible spaces for yoga, meditation, cooking, and community retreats, the center fosters both physical and mental well-being in a serene setting. The site itself was selected with a focus on minimizing environmental impact, ensuring that only invasive species are removed from the forest, while preserving the native ecosystem. This careful approach exemplifies the museum’s dedication to environmental sustainability and its broader mission to connect visitors to the natural world.
The museum’s expansion features a dynamic exhibit space designed for rotating displays, breakout areas for community groups, and a versatile rooftop area that can host outdoor exhibits, events, and rental functions. The rooftop space provides an adaptable venue for activities such as outdoor yoga and community festivals, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of the design. The building incorporates locally sourced and recycled materials, optimal insulation suited to the northeastern climate, and renewable energy systems to power climate control. Water-efficient fixtures and sensor-controlled lighting further reduce environmental impact.
The structure itself serves as an educational exhibit on sustainable design, showcasing circular materials, energy efficiency, and contextual architecture. This expansion not only fosters a deeper connection between visitors and nature but also stands as a model of green design and environmental responsibility.
