Retail Architects

To us, the essence of retail architecture and design is communicating a brand story in a physical space.  Visitors who come to the store - from the loyal customers to the newly curious browsers - must intuit the brand essence in a natural and authentic way. We do this by creating a customer journey that reveals the brand attributes and backstory.

Slade Architecture has been recognized as one of the top retail architects in a variety of Publications. As retail architects, our passion is to design spaces that convey brand stories in a way that is authentic, tangible and intuitive.

Retail architecture services that we offer

To help create interest we design invitations to discover into our stores and retail spaces. Starting from the first moment of connection, our retail architectural designs tease clues to the seminal brand qualities.

For example, in our Barbie Flagship store in Shanghai, China, we strategically bathed the textured facade with light in the trademark Barbie Pink. The light spills out onto the street dramatically acting as a beacon in a bustling Shanghai shopping district. This distinctive glow is a welcoming homing beacon when seen from the distance in the sidewalk. Before the visitor can make out details of the signage, they are intrigued and interested to find out more. The successful branded interior must develop the appreciation for the merchandise at all scales possible. The scale of the building, the scale of the interior, the scale of the fixture and the scale of the product. In our Barbie Flagship, we had the opportunity to reskin the entire building.

As New York Retail Architects, many of our projects are renovations. We take every opportunity to create a unique and ownable customer journey which touches all the senses.

In Seoul, Korea, at the Fashion Designer Boutique we designed for Martin’s Sitbon, we designed all fixtures and surfaces to have unique sensory qualities. The cash wrap is “squishy” rubber, the hanging fixtures are sleek plaster and mirror, the overhead pendant light is hairy. All of these touch points are important to the brand and underscore the innovative use of materials in the designer’s clothing as well as the masterful craftsmanship of the retail design environment.

These physical cues elevate the experience and make it memorable because they force the visitor to challenge their assumptions. In the Martin Sitbon Boutique Design, once customers feel the squishy counter, they often walk around the rest of the store and want to touch everything!
