The Design Air, Best New Airport Lounge, 2025
Slade Architecture is proud to announce the completion of the newly reimagined Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Lounge at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which opened to travelers this past spring. The 4,500-square-foot lounge unfolds as a cinematic progression of spaces, each conceived as a unique environment inspired by the natural beauty of California, the timeless polish of classic Hollywood, and the bold, charismatic identity of Virgin Atlantic’s British heritage.
Designed as a narrative experience, the lounge moves fluidly through a series of rooms that evoke different moods and functions—offering guests a curated path from vibrant energy to calm retreat. Rather than a singular open space, Slade Architecture approached the project as a sequence of interlocking zones, each with its own architectural language, yet unified by a consistent sense of materiality, rhythm, and detail.
The journey begins in the Red Zone, a bold and energetic entry that channels Virgin’s signature color and spirit, immersive and immediate, setting the tone for the experience to follow. Just beyond, the Classic Hollywood Glamour Room pays homage to Los Angeles’ cinematic legacy, with luxurious textures, sculptural lighting, and dramatic silhouettes that elevate the lounge’s central social and dining areas.
At the heart of the space is the Royal Box, a lounge-within-the-lounge that evokes British elegance with a wink—layered in rich materials and architectural gestures that nod to tradition while embracing modern irreverence. The designs emulate the eclectic heritage and witty confidence that define Virgin Atlantic’s UK roots.
For guests seeking calm and restoration, the Zen Den offers a wellness-focused experience, softly lit and grounded in a warm, natural palette that reflects the California landscape. Farther from the social core, the Library is a quiet retreat designed for work and focus—tucked away from the bar, it provides a moment of clarity and solitude within the lounge’s larger rhythm. Slade Architecture orchestrated these zones with intention, creating subtle transitions through light, tone, and texture. The spatial flow encourages intuitive movement, allowing guests to inhabit the lounge on their own terms—whether that means energizing with a drink, relaxing with a book, or resetting in stillness.
By collaborating closely with Virgin Atlantic’s brand and operations teams, Slade Architecture ensured the space reflects both the airline’s visionary ethos and the functional realities of a premium travel experience. The result is a lounge that’s not only beautiful, but deeply considered—transforming the act of waiting into something worthy of memory.
Throughout, the design prioritizes tactility, scale, and clarity. Soft stone, warm wood, textured upholstery, and expressive lighting define the material palette, balancing hospitality-level comfort with the logistical demands of international travel. Every zone feels distinct, yet connected—part of a larger architectural choreography.
